There is one failure in this trade that costs more than all the others combined, and it happens most often on exactly the buildings that most want window film: older towers with bronze or grey tinted curtain wall. The glass cracks, the glazing warranty is void, and the cost lands on whoever authorised the work. It is completely predictable and completely avoidable.
What thermal stress actually is
Glass expands when it heats. In a window, the centre of the pane sits in full sun and heats quickly while the edges stay cooler because they're held in a frame that conducts heat away. The centre wants to expand and the edges don't, which puts the edge of the glass in tension.
Every pane tolerates a certain amount of that. Exceed it and a crack initiates at an edge flaw and propagates across the pane — typically a distinctive curved break running perpendicular from the edge. It's not impact damage and it isn't a manufacturing defect, which is precisely why the glazing warranty won't cover it.
Why tinted glass is the danger case
Body-tinted glass — the bronze and grey glazing that defines so much eighties commercial architecture — achieves its tint by absorbing solar energy in the glass itself rather than reflecting it. That's the whole mechanism, and it means the pane runs substantially hotter than clear glass in the same opening before anyone adds anything to it.
Now apply an absorptive film to the interior face. The film absorbs more energy and transfers heat back into the glass, raising a pane that was already operating near its limit. Very often that's enough. The same film on clear glass would be entirely safe — the failure is a property of the combination, not the product.
The other risk factors that stack
Tint is the largest factor but not the only one. A credible assessment considers all of these together:
- Existing glass tint and whether it's body-tinted or surface-coated.
- Glass thickness and whether the pane is annealed, heat-strengthened, or tempered — annealed is by far the most vulnerable.
- Edge condition, since a clean-cut edge tolerates far more stress than a damaged or seamed one.
- Partial shading from mullions, fins, spandrels, or an adjacent building, which creates the temperature differentials that drive the stress.
- Interior conditions, including blinds or furniture pressed close against the glass, which trap heat at the pane.
Partial shading is the one people miss. A pane half in shadow from a projecting fin can be at greater risk than one in full sun, because the temperature difference across the glass is larger.
What to require from any installer
This isn't guesswork — film manufacturers publish compatibility guidance and provide thermal stress analysis tools for exactly this purpose. A competent installer runs the calculation as routine, and the output tells them which products are safe on your specific glazing.
So the question to ask is direct: has a thermal stress analysis been run on this glazing, what did it assume about glass type, thickness, and shading, and can I see it? If the answer is vague or the analysis doesn't exist, the risk is being transferred to you without being priced.
It doesn't mean you can't have film
None of this rules out treating a tinted curtain wall — it rules out treating it carelessly. Non-absorptive and reflective products, lighter specifications, and in some cases exterior-applied film are all legitimate routes to a good outcome on glazing that couldn't take a standard interior absorptive product.
